Kirtan
Jathas for Last Quarter of 2005
|
S
tarting
in September, SCOD will be happy to host Kirtan Jatha of Bhai
Lokender Singh, Bhai Vipander Singh on harmonium and Bhai Jitender
Singh accompanying on the Tabla. They will be with us from
September to the end of the year. Our own Jaswinder Singh will
accompany on Tabla from time to time as well.
Bhai
Lokender Singh has been performing kirtan for 22 years, and has
conducted kirtan at Poanta Sahib Gurdwara, and the Saharanpur
Gurdwara Sahib in UP, India. Since 1992 he has performed kirtan in
the UK, Canada and the US, including New Jersey Gurdwaras in
Deptford, Glenrock, and Bridgewater. Bhai Lokender Singh has a wife
and two children in India. His kids are in the 9th and
12th grades. Each of the gentlemen has taken a five-year
course in Gurmat Vidyala at Sri Rakab Ganj Sahib Gurdwara, New Delhi.
The
Raagi Jatha will make Delaware their home during their stay. Please
make them feel welcome and enjoy their Kirtan every Sunday!
Heartfelt thanks to Bhai Rattan Singh Ji of the Deptford, New
Jersey Gurdwara, who was instrumental in making this possible.
A lthough
the building at 500 New Road has been home to SCOD for several
years, its age and size makes moving the Gurdwara to a new location
a necessary and practical choice. The SCOD Board of Trustees
has made finding a new site the top priority.
The Board of Trustees has reviewed
over 30 different sites in the last five months and has been in
negotiations for at least 3 different sites. Currently, one
particular site is under serious consideration and negotiation. We
will keep you updated on the progress of this project and hope to
joyfully announce a new location before the end of 2005.
The visiting Raagi Jatha will be
staying in an apartment near the new Gurdwara as the new Gurdwara
will most likely not be zoned for residential use. We welcome and
greatly appreciate any furniture donations that can be made to SCOD
towards filling the apartment. The items will remain the
property of SCOD regardless of the Kirtan Jatha using them.
If you have any furniture to donate,
please contact IP Singh (610-274-0292) who has volunteered to help
arrange transportation of the items.
Sonu
and Hardev and Rajinder
Sunday’s
Guru Ka Langar is a joint effort between the sponsoring family of
the week and a devoted group of three volunteers. We greatly
appreciate the Langar seva of Sonu, Hardev & Rajinder and thank
them for being in the kitchen week after week expertly cooking
delicious batches of dal, sabzi, raita, and kheer. Sonu graciously
brings the groceries and supplies to run the kitchen as well. The
seva of the families that sponsor Langar is vital to the Gurdwara.
And these families will tell you that the partnership of Sonu,
Hardev & Rajinder makes sponsoring Langar an enjoyable
experience. Thank you once again Sonu, Hardev and Rajinder!

If you would like to
nominate a SCOD member to appear in this “Spotlight on…”
please contact Mona at 302-235-7505.

General
Members
of SCOD were saddened to see the devastation affecting the citizens
of the Gulf Coast areas. Some of you have asked how we can help.
SCOD recommends those who so desire, to consider a donation to
UNITED SIKHS www.unitedsikhs.org.
United Sikhs is working in conjunction with a national coalition of
charities including Red Cross and Salvation Army.
Langar
being served to Evacuees
The
United Sikhs organization has begun to feed Langar to 1300
evacuees a day through the Dream Center shelter in Donaldson,
Louisiana. The plan is to feed the evacuees for weeks to come as
long as there are supplies. They are in need of blankets, sheets,
towels etc. as well.
Jagsir
Singh said "We appeal to the public and the Sikh sangat to
uphold a 500 year old Sikh tradition of running a community kitchen
and to donate their resources in cash, kind and time. We need a
relay of volunteers to keep the kitchen running.”
You
can donate to this effort through United Sikhs website

Sri
Guru Granth Sahib rescued from New Orleans Gurdwara
The
following is an excerpt from an article posted on the Times of India
website.
“An
intrepid group of U.S-based Sikhs have defied odds and a chaotic
situation in New Orleans to save the Sikh holy scriptures from a
submerged gurdwara in the flooded city.
The
group [United Sikhs] said the Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji's swarupwas
on the Palki (palanquin) and floating on water when the rescue team
entered the building. "I was amazed, looking at the Guru
Sahib's sukhasan on the palki, floating on five feet of water and
untouched by the flood waters," said Hardayal Singh.
The
rescue team paid their respects before the scriptures were carried
on their head to the rescue boat.”

Mr.
Ajit Kang, of the GEC, has elected to step down from his post,
effective this August. Mr. Kang has been a devoted sevadar of the
SCOD and at this time has chosen to focus more of his time toward
his family and business. We thank him for his service and look
forward to working with him in other capacities!
The
Gurdwara Executive Committee (GEC) continues to lead the
day-to-day operations of the SCOD. This elected group devotes many
hours toward the goal of a smoothly running Gurdwara. They thank
the many other volunteers that help them accomplish this task every
week. They encourage others to step forward to volunteer for SCOD.
Please contact Deep Kahlon (302-235-7505) or Harjeet Singh
(302-836-8896) if you are interested!
We
also have a Board of Trustees who are responsible for the
long-term planning and wellbeing of the Sikh Center of Delaware.
The main project the Board of Trustees is working on this year is
replacing the physical building that houses the Gurdwara.
The
Board of Trustees and GEC work very closely together. Their roles
within SCOD are detailed in the SCOD Bylaws. Please visit the
website www.sikhcenterofdelaware.org
and click on Management to learn more about the GEC, the Board of
Trustees, and the Bylaws.
